Project Pollinate Tarnok – Update

Sup y’all. An update on Project Pollinate Tarnok.  Check it, here’s the first post from a couple months ago.  In the photo below,  I am just checking under the hood – I’m checking for swelling or… whatever the heck a S. ‘Tarnok’ pod is supposed to do at this time.  (I have no clue, it’s my first time doing this with Tarnok.) When I did this cross, I was doing a continuous pollen dump on the stigmas.  Honestly, I don’t know if there’s any seed in there or not. This could of been a complete failure, but heck, I tried. If no seed this year, I’ll try again next year.

I wonder…

Yellow Petals, Green Petals

Ah, here be a quick update on this cross. Now that a few plants are maturing, I’m able to notice some variation, not just in the pitchers, but the flowers too. Check it out!

Flower variation: in the anthocyanin free flavor of  S. (purpurea ssp. purpurea x rubra ssp. jonesii) x (leucophylla x rubra ssp. gulfensis).

Seeing Double

Dude, I’m, seein’ double! Check out this lid!

S. 'Reptilian Rose' x (flava v. rubricorpora x leucophylla)
[S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ x (flava v. rubricorpora x leucophylla)]

I recently noticed this on one of the seedlings. It’s not a trait that is on all pitchers of this plant but just happened on this one pitcher.  I’ve seen this happen a couple of times in other peoples collection, but it doesn’t happen very much from what I can tell. Interesting though!

This double lidded pitcher is from one of the seedlings of S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ x (flava v. rubricorpora x leucophylla).  The cross was done by Dr. Travis H. Wyman and S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ was created by the master-hybridizer dude, Phil Faulisi.

Below is what the other pitchers of this seedling are starting to look like. It’s a photo of the same plant, just different “regular” pitcher.

Blooming

Ah, they grow up so fast… This is a cross I did of Sarracenia (purpurea ssp. purpurea x rubra ssp. jonesii) x (leucophylla x rubra ssp. gulfensis)  – and yes, It is an anthocyanin free clone.  It was only back in 2008 that the babies first sprouted. (You can check out my post here on this cross.) Today, we got flower buds getting ready to open, and so the cycle of breeding starts all over again…

The below flowers are outdoors, so their growth rate and flower schedule  a bit behind the plants in the greenhouse. This still works out for me, as I can still pollinate, if I wanted to, even “later” in the season with pollen that was stored from earlier blooms.

Just thinking about this – from when I first crossed it till now seemed to go by so quickly, however waiting for this moment almost seemed like an eternity.  I’ll feel the same way about some of my other crosses, but I guess part of the fun is the anticipation, right?

Widemouth Hybrid

Back in 2009, I did a cross using a Sarracenia flava form, informally called  flava “widemouth”, just cuz… it gots a big ol’ mouf!  It’s nectar roll is pronounced more than a typical Sarracenia flava. The pollen parent was a Sarracenia leucophylla “red” x minor var. okeefenokeensis

So, flash forward to 2011, this is what one of the seedlings is looking like.  Its mouth is somewhat pronounced and it has some of those little light window things (areoles) visible around the tube.  It’s only 2 years old, but for this “kid”, I am really hoping that mouth stays pretty big as it grows up.

Reptile Crossing Revisited

Hello fellow grower folks! With spring here, many pitchers are just exploding into growth. From the seedlings, I’m being constantly surprised with what’s coming forth.  Here’s an update on how these babies are doing from The Reptile.  For those of you who don’t know about Phil Faulisi’s S.’Reptilian Rose’ (a freekin’ rad hybrid), you can read up on it here.  I’ve first mentioned about the reptile crossings done by Dr. Travis Wyman in this post about 8 months ago in August, 2010.  The seedlings have gone dormant since then, had their pitchers trimmed back, and now that it’s growing season —  the pitchers are coming back with a vengeance.  There are still quite a few seedling plants sending out pitchers that I will update you on later once those have developed, but for now, this is the insanity that is going on.  Again, special thanks to Travis and Phil for their inspirational Sarracenia madness.

Howdy! I got home tonight while there was still a little light out (amazingly enough), and snapped this shot of an up and comping S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ hybrid. This is one of a few that are coming up right now.  This  is a seed grown plant and showing off some of it’s first pitchers of the season. The  pitcher on the left just opened, so has a bit of that pinched mouf’ thing going on.  The cross was created by Dr. Travis Wyman.  As you know, S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ truly is a stunning plant, and is one of my all time favorites, and was created by fellow Sarracenia dude-homie-bro, (and freekin’ Sarracenia Master), Phil Faulisi.

This seedling is just under 2 1/2 years old now (germinated in December, ’08) and as you can see, it’s showing some character now. I’ll update again in a bit once there’s more pitchers that are open. Check this out, for a look back  at some of the other seedlings just a about 8 months ago. My how the kids grow fast!
