Howdy! I was up early today and caught my Sarracenia leucophylla ‘Tarnok’ flower opening…
Just wanted to share this photo of the mutant weird-yet-awesome flower. It’s what makes this leucophylla so special as it’s has a quite a different flower structure. Notice the small white tips in the middle — those are the stigmas and I actually am attempting to pollinate it. This morning I threw on some S. flava var. cuprea pollen on those little tips and will hope for the best. S. leucophylla ‘Tarnok’ is not known to be a very good pod parent, but we’ll try and see what happens. Even if it doesn’t work, it’s flower structure is one to be enjoyed.

Good Luck with that pollinating
years ado it was declared sterile not sure who did that or how they figured it out
I hear it is best to do the pollination for at least 3 days in a row especially with this one. As far as I know ,noone knows when it is receptive
There is also the question of even though it the flower has stigmas, do the pollen tubes carry thru to the ovaries
So many questions so few answers
Thanks Mama Lo, I know another grower who got seed from S. ‘Tarnok’, but not sure how those turned up. So many questions, I agree. Anyway, we’ll see what happens this year…
I know that 3 or 4 people in the world were able to succeed in pollinatin S. leucophylla Tarnok, and one of them is an Italian grower. He told me that you have to choose pollen from a VERY, VERY strong plant. He choose a flava flava from garden center, and got something like 20 or 30 seeds, 4 germinated and are now going into their second year of life!
Good luck and keep us posted
PS i’m going to try that too. My tarnok sent out three flower buds XD
Hello Yuri! Please keep us posted on how your Tarnok pollination goes! I hope i get seed from this. I do know another grower that did get seed as well, but I haven’t heard anything for a couple years. I’ll see. How are the seedlings from the other grower doing? I’d be interested to see if the flower mutation carries over!
Good luck. I’m just trying to raise my plants and not kill them so I’m very impressed by your attempts at pollination.
Thanks Bom! This particular plant is a bit harder to get seed from, and as Lois mentioned above, has even been called sterile by some people. I hope to get some seed and hope that this flower mutation carries over in the offspring!
Unfortunately i have not S. Alata biflora, otherwise this would have been a nice cross to check if flower mutation carries on..
or s. Alata with white flower, too..
I agree! It would be pretty spectacular!
Loverly pics!
Thanks Jenn!
