Sarracenia flava “Red” x moorei

Sarracenia flava “red” x moorei – a Phil Faulisi creation

There’s a little bit of color popping up at my here and there. One such plant that is exhibiting a little bit of color is S. flava “red” x moorei – a Phil Faulisi hybrid. Colors are pretty decent for the current sub par conditions, however once I get some better light it should really get intense. Can’t wait!

Jagged

Cross done by Dr. Travis H. Wyman. I started to germinate seed back in 2008 and have had a few interesting variations on the jagged lipped theme as imparted by the S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ parentage.  S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ most definitely is one of my favorite Sarracenia out there – created by the legend, Phil Faulisi.  I decided to shoot this in black and white because I really wanted to focus more on the structure of that jagged nectar roll. So far this year it’s been rather colorless anyway because of the lighting situation. Below, back in June 2011, this is what this plant looked like — a deep and intense red flavor. Even without the color, I’m truly in love with that jagged lip.

Open

Now that spring is here, many of the plants are jumping out off dormancy, throwing up so many flower buds, as well as opening up new pitchers.   Gotta love the season! Here’s a quick shot of a pitcher opening (S. ‘Love Bug’ x flava var. rubricorpora) up to start off your week. Hope everyone’s having a good start to the week!

Cinnamon and Fire

Oh, more interesting things are being found here and there! Here’s a couple young plants from a cross of  Sarracenia “Savanna Fire” and Sarracenia flava “Cinnamon Tube”; this particular cross was done by my friend Wes Buckner a few years ago.  He sent me some seeds from this cross and they’re turning out pretty nice.  By the way, S. flava “Cinnamon Tube” is a cross between flava var. rubricorpora x flava var. cuprea.   Bear in mind the photos of the young plants below are last year’s pitchers that I left from the trimdown;  they’re tell-tale signs of what is to come in the future.  Last year I had the seedlings growing somewhat under the deck, so they didn’t get as long of a photoperiod as I would of liked to give them.  They would of had colors that were more intense if under sun all day. Anyway, the plants are dormant and will wake up in the coming month or two and I’m really looking forward to that.

Again, note the variation between the different siblings.  There’s more siblings that I’ve trimmed back and I’m looking forward to what they’ll show off in the coming season!

Another RR Crossing

I’m constantly amazed at all the interesting insanity that these S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ hybrids exhibit.

Here’s yet another seedling from a cross that was done by Dr. Travis H. Wyman.  S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ is a plant created by Phil Faulisi. (One of my favorites!) Many seedlings that are coming up from this cross are showing some unique and very interesting characteristics.  The particular youngin’ plant photographed here  drew my attention as it almost looks like a mushroom cloud rising out of the pitcher.  I hope it keeps this hood configuration as it matures.  Dude, It’s the bomb, yo!

Project Pollinate Tarnok – Update

Sup y’all. An update on Project Pollinate Tarnok.  Check it, here’s the first post from a couple months ago.  In the photo below,  I am just checking under the hood – I’m checking for swelling or… whatever the heck a S. ‘Tarnok’ pod is supposed to do at this time.  (I have no clue, it’s my first time doing this with Tarnok.) When I did this cross, I was doing a continuous pollen dump on the stigmas.  Honestly, I don’t know if there’s any seed in there or not. This could of been a complete failure, but heck, I tried. If no seed this year, I’ll try again next year.

I wonder…
