Darling Babies

CUTE ALERT! Just an update on the Darlingtonia californica – mountain clone babies! These seedlings sprouted from seeds that were sent to me from Sam Bookhardt (on twitter: @SammLiberty) back in October of 2011. Check that post out here!

I’ve stratified and germinated these Darlingtonia seeds in the same fashion as my Sarracenia seeds. (Check that post out here.) I’m proud to report that these babies sprouted and are doing well. Aren’t they just friggin’ adorable?!

So It Begins

Howdy y’all!

Sorry I haven’t really posted for a while. Lots of stuff going on for me lately. I just wanted to let ya know that *yes*, I am still alive. Today was my first day on the new job. I’ve been in transition mode last week, hence my short absence. I hope to settle into my new (and very awesome) schedule soon to bring you more Sarracenia and carnivore cheer. Yes.

Since we’re on the topic of seed germination and growth, (both in the garden and personally for me…) I wanted to show you how some of the new seeds are now doing out of the batch I referenced in the last post. I see green, and some little root hair thingies forming! Photo taken today, 6/6/11. Gawrsh, aren’t they cute?

Fill ‘er Up

My new project: Fill ‘er up.
I’ll be starting a few seedlings yet again. I know, I’m a little behind, for this year.
I got two tubs and a few square pots. This is going to be a fun undertaking. For now, here is the blank canvas on which this carnivorous art work will soon begin…

I’ll keep you posted as things fill up and (hopefully) grow.

Reptile Crossing Revisited

Hello fellow grower folks! With spring here, many pitchers are just exploding into growth. From the seedlings, I’m being constantly surprised with what’s coming forth. Here’s an update on how these babies are doing from The Reptile. For those of you who don’t know about Phil Faulisi’s S.’Reptilian Rose’ (a freekin’ rad hybrid), you can read up on it here. I’ve first mentioned about the reptile crossings done by Dr. Travis Wyman in this post about 8 months ago in August, 2010. The seedlings have gone dormant since then, had their pitchers trimmed back, and now that it’s growing season — the pitchers are coming back with a vengeance. There are still quite a few seedling plants sending out pitchers that I will update you on later once those have developed, but for now, this is the insanity that is going on. Again, special thanks to Travis and Phil for their inspirational Sarracenia madness.

Sarracenia (minor x ‘Judith Hindle’) x ‘Adrian Slack’

As I was checking on the seedlings today, I noticed this one out of the batch. This is a from a cross I did in 2009, and I started to germinate in 2010 with the parents as Sarracenia (minor x ‘Judith Hindle’) x ‘Adrian Slack’. It’s starting to throw out little baby pitchers that are somewhat defining now and just found this one worth mentioning. Now, as it matures, it may not even look like anything remotely close to this. It may just turn into something I’ll compost. Maybe. Who knows. Seedlings will change appearance as they mature, but I found that this one is putting out some interesting pitchers right now. It’s a little bit under a year old and I’m hoping it keeps those areoles (the lighter spots) on the tube as it matures. I’m also hoping that the color from the the parent plants will pull through, especially with the S. ‘Judith Hindle’ coloration in the late season. Ah, only time will tell…

Some Nice Surprises

Salutations,
Man, it’s been pretty busy – I would imagine this is so for ALL of us in this holiday season. My cube day job especially has been pretty busy – resulting in my recent silence here on the blog. Honestly, I’d rather NOT have these mini hiatuses but would rather share Sarracenia goodness with everyone. All day. Every day. These past couple of weeks have most certainly has been quite the flurry of activity.

Anyway, I just wanted to say a very special thank you to fellow blogger James at Lost in the Landscape! (If you haven’t done so, check his blog!) He had sent me a few things that really added some awesomeness in my not-so awesome past couple of weeks… (Thanks James, you ROCK!)

[Some seeds that will have some star potential! It may not look like much now, but I wanted to start documenting their growth. A couple years later I’ll probably refer back to this post just to show how these plants started.]

[Sarracenia division, unconfirmed ID at this point, but we’re pretty sure that it is a S. ‘Judith Hindle’]

Surprise
[I’m really excited about this one- Seedlings of S. x melanorhoda, Triffid Park x purpurea ssp. veonsa v. burkii f. luteola. Yes! I will be using these for breeding in the anthocyanin free line. They have that recessive antho free gene in them now!]

[I potted them up a couple of nights ago right when I got home. It was about 10pm, and dark and cold out, but I still did it! Brrr!]
