Cross done by Dr. Travis H. Wyman. I started to germinate seed back in 2008 and have had a few interesting variations on the jagged lipped theme as imparted by the S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ parentage.  S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ most definitely is one of my favorite Sarracenia out there – created by the legend, Phil Faulisi.  I decided to shoot this in black and white because I really wanted to focus more on the structure of that jagged nectar roll. So far this year it’s been rather colorless anyway because of the lighting situation. Below, back in June 2011, this is what this plant looked like — a deep and intense red flavor. Even without the color, I’m truly in love with that jagged lip.

Seeing Double

I recently noticed this on one of the seedlings. It’s not a trait that is on all pitchers of this plant but just happened on this one pitcher.  I’ve seen this happen a couple of times in other peoples collection, but it doesn’t happen very much from what I can tell. Interesting though!

This double lidded pitcher is from one of the seedlings of S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ x (flava v. rubricorpora x leucophylla).  The cross was done by Dr. Travis H. Wyman and S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ was created by the master-hybridizer dude, Phil Faulisi.

Below is what the other pitchers of this seedling are starting to look like. It’s a photo of the same plant, just different “regular” pitcher.

Reptile Cheer

Hiya folks, recently it’s been one thing after another for me – just a slight little rough patch…  The plants always cheer me up a bit , they’re like my sanctuary where I can rest, and refocus away from the craziness of life. Today, the Reptile brought me some much needed cheer as now the pitchers are finally opening up. The flowers reminded me of a little sunshine that brightened up my day.

A little Reptile Cheer is always welcome… 🙂

Reptile Crossing Revisited

Hello fellow grower folks! With spring here, many pitchers are just exploding into growth. From the seedlings, I’m being constantly surprised with what’s coming forth.  Here’s an update on how these babies are doing from The Reptile.  For those of you who don’t know about Phil Faulisi’s S.’Reptilian Rose’ (a freekin’ rad hybrid), you can read up on it here.  I’ve first mentioned about the reptile crossings done by Dr. Travis Wyman in this post about 8 months ago in August, 2010.  The seedlings have gone dormant since then, had their pitchers trimmed back, and now that it’s growing season —  the pitchers are coming back with a vengeance.  There are still quite a few seedling plants sending out pitchers that I will update you on later once those have developed, but for now, this is the insanity that is going on.  Again, special thanks to Travis and Phil for their inspirational Sarracenia madness.

A Reptile Baby

Howdy! I got home tonight while there was still a little light out (amazingly enough), and snapped this shot of an up and comping S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ hybrid. This is one of a few that are coming up right now.  This  is a seed grown plant and showing off some of it’s first pitchers of the season. The  pitcher on the left just opened, so has a bit of that pinched mouf’ thing going on.  The cross was created by Dr. Travis Wyman.  As you know, S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ truly is a stunning plant, and is one of my all time favorites, and was created by fellow Sarracenia dude-homie-bro, (and freekin’ Sarracenia Master), Phil Faulisi.

This seedling is just under 2 1/2 years old now (germinated in December, ’08) and as you can see, it’s showing some character now. I’ll update again in a bit once there’s more pitchers that are open. Check this out, for a look back  at some of the other seedlings just a about 8 months ago. My how the kids grow fast!

Reptile Crossing!

Sarracenia ‘Reptilian Rose’  is definately one of my all time favorite plants.  S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ was created by a good friend and breeding mentor, the legend: Phil Faulisi. (DUDE!) The following photos are seed grown crosses of S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ that were created by fellow carnivorous cohort, Dr. Travis Wyman. (Thanks Travis!) These photos were taken in June/July of this year (2010) and seedlings are just a little under 2 years old.  I began to germinate them indoors back during the December of 2008.  You can see some variation and some similarities.  Keep in mind that these plants are still young and still have a lot of growing up to do. Some are showing tell-tale signs of the angular nectar roll, but we won’t really know how pronounced that characteristic will be until these pitchers are fully mature.  And I haven’t noticed any scents just yet… but I’ll keep you posted on my findings and I’ll post photos now and then as the plants mature.  😉

Sproutage!

Howdy y’all!  I was out checking some seeds that I started this year and to my delight, saw one sprouting!  I did this cross early on this year, harvested seed roughly a month ago, put through about 2 weeks cold stratification in the fridge and… viola!

By the way…I did this same cross last year and only had a few seeds from that pod.  A few of those germinated but none survived. (Don’t ask…) I was so torn… anyway, hope to have better success this year.
