A Visit With Phil

I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow Sarracenia addict-bro-dude-legend, Phil Faulisi. As always, my mind was blown by all of the fantastic specimens that I witnessed. Phil is an extraordinary and phenomenal grower, and has such an impact with my breeding efforts. Here’s a short video I put together as well as a slideshow from my visit over at Phil’s spot. And… uh, don’t mind the Bourbon. With Phil, it obviously has a profound effect on his creative process when he thinks about Sarracenia breeding. (Phil – just kiddin’ bro! Or maybe not? Heh Heh! Whatever you’re doing to come up with all of these wonderfully insane plants, keep it up!)

I can’t adequately put into words all of the fantastic-ness that I saw there… so I won’t even try to explain. Here are a few photos for your carnivorous plant viewing pleasure!

Sarracenia "Prince of Darkness"-1
S. ‘Alucard’ – “Prince of Darkness” 
This is a select S. ‘Alucard’ (S. flava var. rubricorpora x ‘Royal Ruby’) created by Phil Faulisi is looking quite crispy this time of year. This monster puts on a brilliant show of deep red large pitchers in the spring averaging 3 feet tall or more as you can see here. However, by the time fall rolls around, this prince is reduced to royal phyllodia.

Signs of spring are being found throughout the Asylum in an increasing frequency. I’m seeing more and more flower buds starting to emerge and new pitchers forming. It’s a great sign, and yeah, I nerd out when seeing things like this. One of the recent finds was of S. ‘Alucard’ “Prince of Darkness.” This is a select S. ‘Alucard’ clone that was created by Phil Faulisi. In the fray of phyllodia, a new pitcher of darkness rises. The “Prince of Darkness” is awake!

Sarracenia ‘Reptilian Rose’ x (flava v. rubricorpora x leucophylla)

Here’s some S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ hybrid diversity for your enjoyment! Below are just a few of the siblings from the same pod of S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ x (flava v. rubricorpora x leucophylla). This cross was done by Dr. Travis H. Wyman. You can see some of the S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ characteristics showing up in the progeny.  S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ (created by Phil Faulisi) is one of my favorite plants because of that jagged nectar roll and also the sweet rose-scent it emits. That angular nectar roll characteristic has transferred onto some of the offspring. Other crosses display more of the influence of the pollen parent plant, a moorei. They didn’t get a chance to develop as much as I would of liked this year because of those low light levels earlier, but I am looking forward to comparing their growth next season. Below are only a few of the crosses, but again it illustrates the rich and great diversity contained within a seed pod.

Sarracenia ‘Reptilian Rose’ x (flava v. rubricorpora x leucophylla)

More of Dr. Travis H. Wyman’s handiwork with S. ‘Reptilian Rose’. Here is only one of the few clones that I have grown out from seed of his cross. Dr. Wyman did this cross in 2008. This particular clone is making a beautiful comeback! It is also showing consistent irregular and chunky nectar roll character which is the thing that I love so much with S. ‘Reptilian Rose’. S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ is hands down one of my favorites and was created by the legendary Phil Faulisi. I hope to have some great updates on the rest of the siblings — especially next growing season. Quite a few of them have thrown up some great spring pitchers in the past. There’s a little bit of color popping up at my here and there. One such plant that is exhibiting a little bit of color is S. flava “red” x moorei – a Phil Faulisi hybrid. Colors are pretty decent for the current sub par conditions, however once I get some better light it should really get intense. Can’t wait!
