Back Home

Home sweet home! I recently returned from a family vacation up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. It’s nice to be back, but I really do miss it up there. I got the chance to visit Karen Oudean and Jerry Addington and meet up with a couple other talented growers. (Kinjie and Phaedra – great to meet you! Brie – I’m sorry we missed you!) And yes, I’ll be featuring photos from that visit in an upcoming post, so stay tuned!

For now, here’s a few snapshots from within The Asylum. Great to be home.

I returned home packing my suitcase with a few plants from Jerry. (Thanks again, Jerry!) The plants have made the trip back safe and sound and have been potted up. Here’s a couple of the plants that made it back with me.

Sarracenia “06-02”  – sibling to Sarracenia “Jerry’s Goliath”
Parentage is uncertain, however Jerry suspects that S. ‘Doreen’s Colossus’ is involved somehow with Sarracenia “06-02” and Sarracenia “Jerry’s Goliath.”

Rising From the Wreckage

It’s that time of year where many of the pitchers from earlier this season are turning into a wreck. Many of the Sarracenia flava and oreophila pitchers are getting crispy. It’s kind of that in between time for me right now. Some plants are fading, while the S. leucophyllas and their hybrids are starting to put out the fall pitchers. During this time of year, the seed pods start ripening and I start preparing for the next generation. Lots of interesting stuff in the works and I’ll share more on this later.  For now, enjoy a few frames of fresh foliage rising above the fading pitchers.

The angular nectar roll of the S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ was tamed by the leucophylla in this plant, however the resulting specimen is still rather quite lovely.

Below are some various clones of S. oreophila x ‘Adrian Slack’, a cross I did back in 2009. The flower pod was harvested on 26 July 2009 and if I recall correctly, I was able to actually start these babies under lights in the late fall/winter of 2009. Note the variation in the photos below – some plants showing some incredible color and form. Other clones, eh – not so much.  Influences from both parents can be spotted among the youngsters. All of them still are pretty interesting and beautiful in their own way. Watching the plants evolve and grow always gives me a sense of self gratification and at the same time also leaves me hungry for more.
