Sarracenia leucophylla ‘Bris’

To some, the mutants and monstrosities of the Sarracenia world are hideous and repulsive. I know that many aren’t into this sorta thing, but that’s ok. Everyone has their own taste. For me, I find these curiosities fascinating and beautiful in their own way. Let’s take a look at Sarracenia leucophylla ‘Bris’ for example – oh what a FREAK. More information about this … this… this THING can be found on the International Carnivorous Plant website. This is still a very young division and I’m really excited to watch it get freakier as it grows. And yes, of course I’m looking forward to breeding with it when that opportunity presents itself.

Sarracenia leucophylla “Wilkerson’s Red Rocket”

Sarracenia leucophylla season is in full swing here, and you’ll be seeing more leucophylla elegance in the upcoming posts! Sarracenia leucophylla “Wilkerson’s Red Rocket” is an outstanding leucophylla that I received from Brooks Gracia. (Thanks Brooks!) This beauty hails from the Bud Wilkerson property – North Walton Co., FL.  I’m sad to report that Brooks tells me that the bog is pretty much extinct now due to drought and cattle. I’m thankful that we have people like Brooks that are helping to maintain and preserve these genetics.

Sarracenia leucophylla – Hurricane Creek White

The Sarracenia leucophyllas and their hybrids are putting on a show this time of year. Below are some frames of Sarracenia leucophylla ‘Hurricane Creek White’. I received these plants from fellow Sarracenia-broski, Mike Wang. These plants originated from seed collected by Dr. Barry Meyers Rice from the original S. leucophylla ‘Hurricane Creek White’ site before the site was destroyed. The destruction of the site is a sad tragedy, and sites like these along with other natural habitats disappearing happen all too often. I’m glad that at least we have genetic representations of these plants in cultivation. I’m thankful that there are growers out there making sure that these genetics survive. Shine on, leucos… shine on!

Back Home

Home sweet home! I recently returned from a family vacation up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. It’s nice to be back, but I really do miss it up there. I got the chance to visit Karen Oudean and Jerry Addington and meet up with a couple other talented growers. (Kinjie and Phaedra – great to meet you! Brie – I’m sorry we missed you!) And yes, I’ll be featuring photos from that visit in an upcoming post, so stay tuned!

For now, here’s a few snapshots from within The Asylum. Great to be home.

I returned home packing my suitcase with a few plants from Jerry. (Thanks again, Jerry!) The plants have made the trip back safe and sound and have been potted up. Here’s a couple of the plants that made it back with me.

Parentage is uncertain, however Jerry suspects that S. ‘Doreen’s Colossus’ is involved somehow with Sarracenia “06-02” and Sarracenia “Jerry’s Goliath.”

Lecophylla Season

It’s that time of year again! Sarracenia leucophyllas putting up their fall pitchers. It’s the start of the season’s final show before the plants settle down for their winter dormancy…

Rising From the Wreckage

It’s that time of year where many of the pitchers from earlier this season are turning into a wreck. Many of the Sarracenia flava and oreophila pitchers are getting crispy. It’s kind of that in between time for me right now. Some plants are fading, while the S. leucophyllas and their hybrids are starting to put out the fall pitchers. During this time of year, the seed pods start ripening and I start preparing for the next generation. Lots of interesting stuff in the works and I’ll share more on this later.  For now, enjoy a few frames of fresh foliage rising above the fading pitchers.
