Sarracenia leucophylla and friends

This year is really flying by. It felt like it was only moments ago where I had fresh spring pitchers and flowers in the Asylum… now I’m seeing more S. leucophylla and S. leucophylla hybrids starting to show their pitchers off. Tis’ the season! Here’s a few S. leucophylla and friends to greet the arrival of August…

Still a very young seedling. They all used to be uber crowded in one pot…
that is until I placed them in group trays. Now they’ll have a little bit more time before getting crowded again. See the second photo of this post. There’s a few others out of this batch that are showing some really nice promise. Stay tuned. 🙂

One of my crosses from a couple of years ago. Showing some character now.

Sarracenia alata "red-black" x 'Kilimanjaro'Sarracenia alata red/black x ‘Kilimanjaro’
The Sarracenia leucophylla influence via S. ‘Kilimanjaro’ shines through on
new fresh pitchers, but as it ages it darkens to a rich deep red. Such a nice plant.

Young and Green

Here’s some young green (anthocyanin free) plants! There’s still a lot of evolving to do, but so far, so good!

Sarracenia (rubra ssp. jonesii AF x minor var. okefenokeensis)
x “Green Monster”
This AF plant is the result of crossing one AF recessive plant with an anthocyanin free plant. This seedling is the only one that survived the multiple moves. Glad that it was the AF one that survived!

I think the little seedling that photo-bombed this photo may be S. “Green Monster” – F2. It’s possible that some of pollen from the pod parent may have gotten on the stigma. At this point, it certainly looks that way.

Update: Beauty from Complexity

Sarracenia (leucophylla x oreophila) x [(leucophylla "red" x minor var. okefenokeensis) x 'Royal Ruby']Sarracenia (leucophylla x oreophila) x [(leucophylla “red” x minor var. okefenokeensis) x ‘Royal Ruby’]
Cross by Dr. Travis H. Wyman

Earlier this month, I wrote about this intriguing and complex creature that was a result of Dr. Travis H. Wymans breeding handiwork. Dr. Wyman did this cross back on 2008.  Phil Faulisi did the pollen parent cross of S. (leucophylla “red” x minor var. okefenokeensis) x ‘Royal Ruby’. As a note for clarity, the leucophylla “red” that was used here is *not* S. ‘Dana’s Delight’ or S. ‘Diana’s Delight’ as some may have noted. It is a red form leucophylla that Phil created and has used in his own lines of Sarracenia breeding. I can’t help but to share another photo… I’m utterly mesmerized by this beauty. Man, that nectar roll is hawt.
