Back Home

Home sweet home! I recently returned from a family vacation up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. It’s nice to be back, but I really do miss it up there. I got the chance to visit Karen Oudean and Jerry Addington and meet up with a couple other talented growers. (Kinjie and Phaedra – great to meet you! Brie – I’m sorry we missed you!) And yes, I’ll be featuring photos from that visit in an upcoming post, so stay tuned!

For now, here’s a few snapshots from within The Asylum. Great to be home.

I returned home packing my suitcase with a few plants from Jerry. (Thanks again, Jerry!) The plants have made the trip back safe and sound and have been potted up. Here’s a couple of the plants that made it back with me.

Sarracenia 06-02
Sarracenia “06-02”  – sibling to Sarracenia “Jerry’s Goliath”
Parentage is uncertain, however Jerry suspects that S. ‘Doreen’s Colossus’ is involved somehow with Sarracenia “06-02” and Sarracenia “Jerry’s Goliath.”

Rising From the Wreckage

It’s that time of year where many of the pitchers from earlier this season are turning into a wreck. Many of the Sarracenia flava and oreophila pitchers are getting crispy. It’s kind of that in between time for me right now. Some plants are fading, while the S. leucophyllas and their hybrids are starting to put out the fall pitchers. During this time of year, the seed pods start ripening and I start preparing for the next generation. Lots of interesting stuff in the works and I’ll share more on this later.  For now, enjoy a few frames of fresh foliage rising above the fading pitchers.

The angular nectar roll of the S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ was tamed by the leucophylla in this plant, however the resulting specimen is still rather quite lovely.

Once again, special thanks to Paul Barden for this gem.

Nepenthes Update

The Nepenthes are adjusting the the higher light levels quite nicely on this end. I moved the Nepenthes not too long ago, and since then I’m seeing a lot of new growth on foliage, and more pitchers will soon follow. With some tinkering and moving plants about, I’m getting the hang of growing Nepenthes in this greenhouse. For now, here are a some photos of recent pitchers.
