Flying Nun Baby

Back in January of 2008, I got some seed from fellow Sarracenia obsessed grower and Sarracenia pusher, Brooks Garcia. (Yeah, he be one of those dudes that got me addicted.)

He crossed Sarracenia “Flying Nun”* x flava var. rubricorpora.  All of seedlings are turning out pretty nice.  This one has some open pitchers now so just wanted to share a couple photos of the progress of this particular “Flying Nun”* baby. Check it out, yo!

*The Sarracenia “Flying Nun” used in this cross is not the catesbaei, S. “Flying Nun” as photographed in the link.  The link shows a plant that was named by Phil Faulisi, as Brooks Garcia noted in the comments.

Flava Flowers

Just a quick shot of some Sarracenia flava flowers. Photo from today. It’s nice to be able to get home and be able to see a little bit of sunlight. And Sarracenia. 🙂

Reptile Crossing Revisited

Hello fellow grower folks! With spring here, many pitchers are just exploding into growth. From the seedlings, I’m being constantly surprised with what’s coming forth.  Here’s an update on how these babies are doing from The Reptile.  For those of you who don’t know about Phil Faulisi’s S.’Reptilian Rose’ (a freekin’ rad hybrid), you can read up on it here.  I’ve first mentioned about the reptile crossings done by Dr. Travis Wyman in this post about 8 months ago in August, 2010.  The seedlings have gone dormant since then, had their pitchers trimmed back, and now that it’s growing season —  the pitchers are coming back with a vengeance.  There are still quite a few seedling plants sending out pitchers that I will update you on later once those have developed, but for now, this is the insanity that is going on.  Again, special thanks to Travis and Phil for their inspirational Sarracenia madness.

A Non Colorful Day

I’ve been ill the past few days. Dumb f#@$’n  flu/cold thing. It sucks.  I’ve been living off a mad concoction of Dayquil, Robitussin, Advil, Nyquil, Aleve, Patron, Vicks Vapor Rub, Patron, Fisherman’s Friend coughdrops, Ricola, Patron, and snorting Thera Flu.  Just kidding – not all that stuff.  Just the shoving of the Vicks up my nose and Thera Flu maybe… heh. (Uh, pay no attention to me now, these are meds are talking. Deeellleeerrrium.)

Anyway, I pretty much rested up for most of the day today, and had enough strength to go out in the garden and shoot around a bit.  Hangin’ out with the plants is a much better medicine than all that stuff I mentioned earlier. They always make me feel a little better.  Here’s a few black n’ whites cuz I’m feeling very non-colorful right now.  I hope I feel more colorful after this dumb flu-cold-illness-cold-weirdness-body-achey-thing is over and done with… Oh bleh.

Enjoy… 🙂

Sarracenia seedlings

Ok… I’m off to inhale more Thera Flu goodness right now… g’nite…

Silky Smooth

Here’s an up an coming seedling that was given to me by good friend Lois Ochs of Raccoon Ridge  nursery, not sure exactly how old this is, but my estimate would be about 3 years old.  The parentage is Sarracenia ‘Lamentations’ x flava var. rubricorpora. I am lovin’ the combination of color and nice satin-ish texture on the trap. Kinda like… dark silk seducing it’s prey to venture farther into the trap … now that’s sexy.

Alien!

Today a co-worker of mine was telling me about some news story she heard about with a UFO sighting in Mongolia… or somfin’ like that… (I guess the story was like… from today, and news clips could be found on places like this…)

But anyway, the whole UFO/alien thing reminded me of one of the plants growin’ out here that I think showed up after UFO’s invaded my grow area or something.  One of the alien dudes were left behind. So I potted it up… Some lime green weird looking Sarracenia-iod-ish type plant from the planet Triffid. Or something…

Actually, it’s just a Sarracenia flava x psittacina. Heh heh. But still, looks pretty durn funny to me – like it just walked out of a space ship or something. 🙂
