Surprise, Jerry!

Back on 6 and 7 Jun 2014, a plan went into effect to surprise one of the wonderful botanical inspirations in my life: my friend, Jerry Addington the GREAT. Jerry was hosting an assemblage of carnivorous plant growers at his place in the Washington countryside and this was something that I did not want to miss. I figured it would be the perfect time to surprise Jerry.

In addition to this, another good friend of mine – the legendary Wes Buckner and his family were all going to be there as well! I saw Wes, Megan, and Caleb a couple of weeks prior to Jerry’s event. They stopped by my place on their road trip out from Tennessee and I got to show them a little bit of the SF Bay Area. Good times!

Anyway, I figured I might as well just surprise them ALL at Jerry’s. Helping me organize this surprise was my brother from another mother – Kinjie Coe. (Yeah, I knowwww – Coe and Co!) I flew out to Portland the day before Jerry’s gathering on Friday, 6 Jun 2014 where Kinjie picked me up and we started on our journey to Jerry’s. On the way up there, Kinjie took me on a little detour to visit another local grower, The Professor. What a way to start a wonderful weekend full of carnivorous plant goodness. (See previous post.)

It was amazing seeing plants, but it was definitely awe inspiring to to meet many other fellow growers and carnivorous-plant-o-philes in person! I am very thankful that I got to meet so many amazing people on this epic weekend.

I recently returned from a family vacation up in Seattle, WA. I love it up there! While I was up there, I had the privilege of visiting my friends Karen Oudean (Oudean’s Willow Creek Nursery) and Jerry Addington (Courting Frogs Nursery.) While at Jerry’s I had the grand pleasure of meeting Pheadra Dunko and Kinjie Coe. It was great meeting you both! (Brie – sorry I just missed you! Next trip!) Sarracenia leucophylla "Juju Lips" x flava "Widemouth"

This was a cross I did back in 2010 using Sarracenia leucophylla “Juju Lips” as the pod parent and Sarracenia flava “Widemouth” as the pollen parent. S. leucophylla “Juju Lips” was a term coined by Jacob Farin of Sarracenia Northwest. It’s Hawaiian slang for “big lips.” This leucophylla has a nice little spout action that gives it a proportionately larger looking lip when compared to the rest of the pitcher. Sarracenia flava “Widemouth” also has a larger than average “spout” in proportion to the pitcher structure. I wanted to combine both of these characteristics in this cross and my goal was to come up with a moorei (a S. flava/leucophylla cross) with a wide dipping spout. Below are a couple youngsters. They’re still young and there are slight hints expressed in the plants of what I was targeting. It is my hope that the wide/deep lipped characteristic is expressed more as they mature. So far, I kind of like what I am seeing.

BACPS Show and Sale – 15 Jun 2013

This last weekend I had a chance to attend the 2013 BACPS (Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society) Show and Sale. Saw lots of amazing plants as well as fellow enthusiasts who have become great friends throughout the years. It was also great to connect with a few new people that I’ve been in touch with online and now finally had a chance to meet in person. I got the impression that they thought I was stranger in the flesh. Yeah, I probably am.

As an added bonus, here’s some video from the day too! I figured this was a great opportunity to *finally* start a Youtube channel and give this video blogging thing a shot. It’s kinda rough, but it’s a start. Dahlia came along and gave me some help and encouragement to shoot around a little bit. She started her channel as well! Since Jeremiah was in town and wanted to check out local collections, I was glad to have him, Fernando Rivadavia, and D’Aryt Jov Fränk over at my spot the following day. I was just one of his many stops here in the SF Bay Area. Jeremiah is a legendary grower and runs the Colorado Carnivorous Plant Society. He also partners with Leilani Nepenthes in an effort to make some beautiful and high quality plants available.

Greetings!

Wishing you all a wonderful Happy New Year! 2013 is now here and I am so excited and look forward to so many amazing things this year. One of the things I’ve been working on and recently launched today is THE SHOP! Yeah! You’ll find my extra plants from the collection here. (Plant sales in the USA only.) You will find crosses that I’ve done, seed grown plants that I’ve grown from other brilliant growers, or perhaps even plants that are harder to find in cultivation.

At this moment, I am still going through the plants and doing a few divisions. Inventory will be updated as I find the plants for you beautiful growers. I’ll also be working on a few other non-plant items such as fine art photo prints and clothing/accessories. Check back often and keep a watch on Twitter, or Facebook for updates.

This is an ongoing project for me. If you have any questions, concerns, or if you run into any technical hiccups (yeah, this is all new for me too), please feel free to contact me.
