Sarracenia ‘Leah Wilkerson’ x ‘Adrian Slack’ – 2011 Cross

I recently came across a pot of S. ‘Leah Wilkerson’ x ‘Adrian Slack’ seedlings while rummaging through seemingly endless pots of seedlings to repot – and this one seedling really caught my eye. The cross was done by Brooks Garcia in 2011 and I started to germinate the seeds in 2012. The seedling below is 2 years old and time will tell what it will be like a few years from now.

It’s the same parentage as the plant that I’m calling S. “Legacy” – however the S. “Legacy” cross was done by Brooks a little earlier (in 2008.) This other batch of S. ‘Leah Wilkerson’ x ‘Adrian Slack’ has some promising seedlings, but this one that I separated out looks to hold some nice potential. It’s throat marking marking and pale top remind me of S. “Legacy”, only this plant has a nice contrasting deep red/black border around the lid, nectar roll, and down the central midrib. It’s one plant I’ll be keeping my eye on. As always, great work, Brooks!

2014 First Pitcher Open: Sarracenia “Legacy”

The first pitcher pitcher open for this year goes to the amazing Sarracenia “Legacy” – a select cross between S. ‘Leah Wilkerson’ and S. ‘Adrian Slack’ created by Brooks Garcia.

I’m quite excited about this plant this year. Not just because there’s FINALLY a pitcher open, but if you notice in the first photo — there’s two flower buds on this plant! I honestly didn’t think this would bloom this year as it had a strange off-season bloom last fall. This opens up some wonderful opportunities for crosses this year. Below are a few photos of S. “Legacy” opening up.

Sarracenia “Legacy”… in Bloom?!

Yes, blooms on Sarracenia can happen at times during the fall for reasons that are unknown to me. Often times the flowers during this time of season are on a shorter stalk . One plant that recently sent up a bloom was Sarracenia “Legacy”, a cross done by Brooks Garcia between S. ‘Leah Wilkerson’  and S. ‘Adrian Slack’. I’m not so sure it will bloom in the spring now that it’s bloomed now. Crud. Oh well, fingers crossed! In any event, I wanted to share this photo of the flower now that S. “Legacy” has bloomed… even if it’s kinda off season for this sorta thing.

Sarracenia ‘Reptilian Rose’ x ‘Adrian Slack’ – Clone #1

This is a cross I did back in 2010 between S. ‘Reptilian Rose’ and S. ‘Adrian Slack’ – you can see how this plant (as well as it’s other siblings) looked like earlier in the year in this post. It’s still not of blooming maturity or size, but I’m really looking forward to watching this one mature. The spring pitchers so far seem to be more stocky in appearance, but these fall pitchers ain’t bad at all…

Back Home

Home sweet home! I recently returned from a family vacation up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. It’s nice to be back, but I really do miss it up there. I got the chance to visit Karen Oudean and Jerry Addington and meet up with a couple other talented growers. (Kinjie and Phaedra – great to meet you! Brie – I’m sorry we missed you!) And yes, I’ll be featuring photos from that visit in an upcoming post, so stay tuned!

For now, here’s a few snapshots from within The Asylum. Great to be home.

I returned home packing my suitcase with a few plants from Jerry. (Thanks again, Jerry!) The plants have made the trip back safe and sound and have been potted up. Here’s a couple of the plants that made it back with me.

Parentage is uncertain, however Jerry suspects that S. ‘Doreen’s Colossus’ is involved somehow with Sarracenia “06-02” and Sarracenia “Jerry’s Goliath.”
