A plant that has been catching my eye in recent season is a moorei that I’m calling S. “Sun Piercer” as a working name. I don’t remember exactly where the seed came from or who did the cross. The seed was received as S. leucophylla 30A x flava “Goldie” from a few years ago. It is turning out to be a rather nice moorei featuring golden undertones, an angular … Read More
Lidless Moorei: S. ‘Bris’ x flava lidless giant
More lidless-ness? Yes please. Here are some clips and photos of the lidless S. moorei seedlings, resulting from a primary cross of two lidless plants: S. leucophylla ‘Bris’ x flava “lidless giant”. The cross was done in 2021. Pollination in May, seed harvested in September, then germinated in December of that year. Out of the five seeds, three sprouted and two survived. This past season, seedlings grew outside for … Read More
Lidless Moorei: S. ‘Bris’ x flava “Lidless Giant”
Update to this. In May of 2021 I did a cross between two lidless plants – S. leucophylla ‘Bris’ x S. flava “lidless giant”. It’s a pretty interesting primary lidless cross. Seeds harvested in Sep of that year. Five seeds were harvested. Three germinated. Two survived. And I am sure glad those did. I had them growing outdoors this year. They’ve developed slowly but steadily. One is now showing … Read More
Sarracenia moorei – ERT Select Clone
Early last year, fellow Sarraceniaphile and friend Mike Wang sent me a small division of a really nice moorei with an outstanding prominent throat splotch. It is rather a recent addition to the garden, but so far I am really enjoying how it is turning out. Looking forward to seeing this at full maturity. Photos from Jul 2021.
Seedling Spotlight: Lidless Moorei
A very special seed recently germinated. It may not look like much now, but this is one that I’m pretty excited about. As some of you may know, I’m into strange and interesting looking plants. This recent sprout is no exception and is one that I’m really looking forward to watching develop. The parentage uses two lidless plants – S. leucophylla ‘Bris’ as the pod parent and the pollen … Read More
Abbreviated
Here’s an interesting moorei seedling that has been catching my eye. It is still a young plant but already shows some great character and rich color. It’s not quite lidless, but it does have an interesting “abbreviated” hood. The hood pairs well with the large cavernous maw. This is a select clone of a moorei cross I did in 2017, germinated 2018 – grown completely outdoors.
May 2020: First Week
With the weather warming up, the plants are gaining a lot of momentum and pushing up new growth. Here are a few photos from this first week of May. There is a lot to look forward to; and there is a lot to enjoy in this present moment. It’s fascinating watching the garden evolve through the season.
Spring Update
It’s the end of April and plants here in the PNW are on the move. After a long dormancy, it is so refreshing to see growth happening. It’s been pretty busy in the garden the past few months. A lot of the work happens right before the explosion of growth. There’s the traditional pre-growth clean up. This includes (but not limited to) re-potting, dividing, trimming, and also building some … Read More
