24 Months: S. courtii AF x “Green Monster”

Separating Sarracenia courtii x "Green Monster"Sarracenia courtii AF x “Green Monster” – September 2010

S. courtii x “Green Monster” is a cross I did back in 2009 – a personal favorite of mine. (Awww heck, aren’t all things that are anthocyanin free? Hah!) There were many nice plants that came out of this batch. I may re-make it if the opportunity presents itself again.

I’m always amazed to see how far the plants have come and how big they’ve grown. Looking back always provides a great perspective and reminder that from little and seemingly insignificant things can come something amazing.

  1. Nice plant. IMPRESSIVE seedling growth!

  2. what do you do with the thousands of seedlings you produce that aren’t selected to grow out? or do you grow out every single one? i usually have around 500 new daylily seedlings blooming every year and of that 500 i keep maybe 25 and the next year i’ll keep maybe 10 from those. usually by the fourth or fifth year of evaluation i’m down to one or two seedlings i’d consider registerable from the original 500. i hate having to compost them just because they aren”t anything spectacular, so i tend to give them away. just wondering what other breeders do. so far i haven’t had good luck with sarr seeds so that hasn’t been an issue.

    • Hey Cody! Good question! For the ones that haven’t been selected, I’ve sold, traded, given away/donated, and also composted. Completely understand where you are coming from as well. I hate to compost things … Man, your day lily collection sounds amazing though! Would love to see some pics!

this is a misc album, some seedling pics in there, but mostly registered cvs, a few mountain shots, some snake pics and other randomness.

    • WOW. Very cool plants! I really enjoy the wide range of colors/textures — truly spectacular. I really liked web of intrigue x mildred mitchell, rock solid, alex townsend x jt davis, zephyr john — great colors! Thanks so much for sharing! :)

  4. That is a beauty, Rob! Very nice indeed. I’d love to see a group of those interspersed with some dark red varieties ;-)

As a rise hybridizer, I have had a similar experience as Cody: it is just the nature of the work that 98% of your results are not good enough to keep, so you either discard it, or give it away. If you raise thousands of plants you have no choice but to compost a lot of them. Otherwise it becomes unmanageable!

    • Thanks Paul! I should get some type of arrangement/group bog going on next season when the plants will be looking better! I’m sorting through the plants and grouping/organizing them at the moment. Fun times!

  5. I have a couple of your plants from this cross and I agree that it’s produced some cool results. One of mine looks like a big, hooded courtii, the other more like the one you show here, though with fewer spots, and a hood that’s frillier and broader. I think this cross has a better than 2% keeper rate!

    • Thanks James! All of them actually are pretty awesome! Some may be more vigorous than others, but all of them are interesting individuals! Your plants are doing well and look amazing! I LOVE that frilly hooded one! You never know what you’ll get and I’m very happy that they have a home with you!
